Dr. Francis Bullock is a Senior Advisor to PureTech Ventures. Previously, he served as the Senior Vice President, Research Operations at Schering Plough Research Institute, from 1981-1993, where he took over 30 new chemical entities into clinical development in many therapeutic areas including antibacterials, antifungals, antivirals, cardiovasculars, pain, inflammation, allergy, and cancer. His track record includes five successful registrations including Claritin and Intron (Interferon Alpha 2b) that generated cumulative peak sales of around $3.5B annually. Dr. Bullock serves on the board of directors for TSI Corporation, GTC Biotherapeutics, Array Biopharma, and ARCA Discovery.
Dr. Ronald Cape Senior Partner
Dr. Cape is a Senior Partner at PureTech Ventures. Dr. Cape is recognized as one of the fathers of the biotechnology industry. He was the co-founder of Cetus Corporation, where he was chairman for 20 years and CEO for 13 years until the company merged with Chiron Corporation. Cetus was a world leader and pioneer in genetic engineering and was particularly well known for its development of genetically engineered interleukin-2 and beta-interferon and for the discovery and development of GeneAmp PCR, the polymerase chain reaction. The true innovation of PCR was recognized by the only Nobel Prize ever won for work in a biotech company. Dr. Cape is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Academy of Microbiology and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is the recipient of many awards and has held dozens of prestigious board positions in the public and private sectors. Since 1991, Dr. Cape has been an investor in the field of biotechnology and a board member of various companies. He was the founding chairman of Darwin Molecular Corporation (which was later sold to Chiroscience plc), was former chairman of the board of Neugenesis, is currently chairman and director of Caprion, Inc., co-founder and board member of Cellicon Biotechnologies, and sits on the board of several other biotechnology companies. He has served on the boards of Princeton University, Rockefeller University, and the Whitehead Institute at MIT. He received his AB from Princeton University, PhD from McGill University, and MBA from Harvard University.
Dr. Robert Langer Co-Founder, Senior Partner
Dr. Langer is a co-founder and Senior Partner at PureTech Ventures. Dr. Langer is known for his groundbreaking discoveries in the fields of polymer chemistry, controlled drug delivery, and tissue engineering. He is one of 13 Institute Professors (the highest honor awarded to a faculty member) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Dr. Langer has written over 1000 articles and has more than 750 issued or pending patents worldwide, one of which was cited as the outstanding patent in Massachusetts in 1988 and one of 20 outstanding patents in the United States. Dr. Langer has received over 170 major awards, including the 2006 United States National Medal of Science, and the Charles Stark Draper Prize in 2002, considered the equivalent of the Nobel Prize for engineers and the world’s most prestigious engineering prize. He is also the only engineer to receive the Gairdner Foundation International Award; 68 recipients of this award have subsequently received a Nobel Prize. Among numerous other awards, Dr. Langer has received are the Dickson Prize for Science (2002), Heinz Award for Technology, Economy and Employment (2003), the Harvey Prize (2003), the John Fritz Award (2003) (given previously to inventors such as Thomas Edison and Orville Wright), the General Motors Kettering Prize for Cancer Research (2004), the Dan David Prize in Materials Science (2005) and the Albany Medical Center Prize in Medicine and Biomedical Research (2005), the largest prize in the U.S. for medical research. In 2006, he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. In 1998, he received the Lemelson-MIT prize, the world’s largest prize for invention for being “one of history’s most prolific inventors in medicine.” In 1989 Dr. Langer was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, and in 1992 he was elected to both the National Academy of Engineering and to the National Academy of Sciences. He is one of a few people ever elected to all three United States National Academies and the youngest in history to ever receive this distinction. Dr. Bennett Shapiro Chairman, Senior Partner
Dr. Shapiro is a Senior Partner and Chairman of the Board at PureTech Ventures. He was most recently Executive Vice President, Worldwide Licensing and External Research for Merck. He joined Merck Research Laboratories in 1990 as Executive Vice President, Basic Research. In this position he was responsible for all basic and preclinical research activities at Merck worldwide. Dr. Shapiro led the research program that resulted in FDA registration of approximately 20 drugs and vaccines, including Vioxx, Arcoxia, and Emend, and stretching as far back as the A2 antagonist Cozaar, the hepatitis A vaccine VACQTA, and many others. From 1999-2003 Shapiro oversaw all in-licensing activities for Merck. Previously, he was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Washington. He is the author of over 120 papers on the molecular regulation of cellular behavior and the biochemical events that integrate the cascade of cellular activations at fertilization. He has served on many institutional advisory boards and scientific review panels, and is currently a member of the board of various life science companies, including VBL, Protein Forest, Celera, Momenta, Elixir, Satori, and Ikaria. He also sits on the boards of the Drugs for Neglected Disease Initiative and the Mind and Life Institute, and serves on the Harvard - MIT Division of Health Sciences & Technology Advisory Committee. Dr. Shapiro received his MD from Jefferson Medical College.
Dr. John Zabriskie Co-Founder, Senior Partner
Dr. Zabriskie is a co-founder and Senior Partner at PureTech Ventures. He is past chairman of the board, CEO and president of NEN Life Science Products, Inc., a leading supplier of kits for labeling and detection of DNA. At NEN Dr. Zabriskie led the successful turnaround and sale of the company in a transaction that generated a 20x return for investors. Prior to joining NEN, Dr. Zabriskie was President and CEO of Pharmacia and Upjohn, Inc., a Fortune 500 pharmaceutical company formed by the merger of Pharmacia AB of Sweden and the Upjohn Company of Kalamazoo, Michigan. As Chairman of the Board and CEO of the Upjohn Company, Dr. Zabriskie led the Upjohn project, which resulted in the $12 billion merger of equals. Prior to joining Upjohn in 1994, Dr. Zabriskie was Executive Vice President of Merck and Co., Inc. Dr. Zabriskie was a member of the US Healthcare Leadership Council, and has served on a number of boards for healthcare and academic institutions, including as one of the founding investors and board members of Momenta. He currently serves on the boards of the Kellogg Co., Cellicon Biotechnologies, Protein Forest, Array BioPharma, and ARCA Discovery. Dr. Zabriskie is a native of Aurora, NY and received his AB in chemistry from Dartmouth College and his PhD in organic chemistry from the University of Rochester.
Daphne Zohar is the founder and managing partner of PureTech Ventures, a Boston-based venture creation firm specializing in translating breakthrough research from top tier academic institutions into therapies that will impact human health and well-being. PureTech’s senior partners include entrepreneurs and leaders from the highest echelon of pharma, biotech and academia. In 2010, Ms. Zohar was recognized by BioWorld, a widely-read biotechnology industry publication, as one of 28 leaders predicted to be the "movers and shakers" of the biotechnology industry over the next twenty years, previously she was named one of the world's top young innovators who will shape the future of technology by MIT's Technology Review magazine and one of the top "40 under 40" by the Boston Business Journal. Dr. Elenko is a Partner at PureTech Ventures. Prior to joining PureTech, Dr. Elenko was a consultant with McKinsey & Company where he advised senior executives of both Fortune 500 and specialty pharmaceutical companies on a range of issues such as product licensing, mergers and acquisitions, R&D strategy, and marketing. Some of his projects at McKinsey included working on a multi-billion dollar merger, crafting a brand strategy for a blockbuster drug, and recommending both pre-clinical and approved products for licensing. Dr. Elenko did graduate work in molecular pharmacology and cell biology that resulted in several peer reviewed papers and was the recipient of NIH training grants. While a graduate student, Dr. Elenko started and served as President of the Technology Evaluation Group, LLC which performed technical due diligence for angel investors in early stage life science companies. Dr. Elenko received his BA in Biology from Swarthmore College and his PhD in Biomedical Sciences from University of California, San Diego.
Mr. Steinberg is a Partner at PureTech Ventures. He joined the company in 2002. As a member of PureTech, Mr. Steinberg has been on the founding teams of Enlight Biosciences and Endra Inc. as founding CEO. Previously, he served as Chief Business Officer of portfolio company Follica, Inc., and VP of Operations for portfolio company Satori Pharmaceuticals . He serves on the Board of Directors of Endra Inc. and Enlight Biosciences. Prior to joining PureTech, he was a strategy consultant with the Boston Consulting Group and Vertex Partners, focusing on R&D and product strategy and strategic alliances for Fortune 500 pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms. Mr. Steinberg also worked as a research associate in Procter and Gamble Pharmaceuticals' R&D organization. Mr. Steinberg received his BA in Biology with distinction from Cornell University and graduated with high honors from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business with an MBA in strategy and finance.
Mr. Goddard is Manager of Operations and Finance. He joined PureTech in fall of 2005. Dan is responsible for the coordination of the financial administration of PureTech and its in house portfolio companies, as well as oversight of its information technology systems. Mr. Goddard earned a B.A. in English with the University of Massachusetts.
Dr. Rox Anderson Advisor
Dr. Rox Anderson is the founding SAB Chairman for Follica and is an advisor to Enlight Biosciences. Dr. Anderson is a Professor at Harvard Medical School, an adjunct Professor at MIT, and Director of the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Wellman is the world’s largest academic facility dedicated to the use of light for diagnosis and therapy. After graduating from MIT, Dr. Anderson received his M.D. degree from Harvard through the MIT-Harvard Health Sciences and Technology program. He conceived and developed dermatologic surgery using selectively-absorbed laser pulses, which is now the preferred basis for treatment of birthmarks, pigmented lesions, tattoos, hypertrichosis and other conditions. He has made many contributions to understanding laser-tissue interactions, tissue optics, photodynamic therapy, and optical diagnostics. In addition to research at the Wellman Center, Dr. Anderson practices dermatology at Massachusetts General Hospital and teaches at Harvard and MIT. Active research includes diagnostic tissue imaging and spectroscopy, photodynamic therapy, mechanisms of laser-tissue interactions, low-level light effects and novel therapy for skin disorders.
Dr. James Collins Advisor
Dr. James Collins is an advisor to PureTech on several initiatives. Dr. Collins is a University Professor and Professor of Biomedical Engineering, as well as the Co-Director and Co-Founder of the Center for BioDynamics at Boston University. His research focuses on using nonlinear dynamical techniques to model, design and construct gene regulatory networks. Dr. Collins' awards include the American Society of Biomechanics Young Scientist Award (1994), MIT's Technology Review's TR100: the top 100 young innovators who will shape the future of technology (1999), Boston University's Metcalf Cup and Prize for Excellence in Teaching (2000), the Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society Early Career Achievement Award (2000), and a MacArthur Fellowship (2003). He is also a Fellow of the American Physical Society (1999) and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (2000). He earned his AB in Physics as valedictorian from Holy Cross, and obtained his DPhil in Medical Engineering from Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar.
Dr. David Elmaleh Co-Founder, Advisor
Dr. Elmaleh, a Co-Founder of PureTech, is the Director of Contrast Media Chemistry at the Massachusetts General Hospital, and Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School . He has co-authored or authored over 120 publications and has 40 registered patents in a range of disciplines, including imaging, pharmaceuticals, and nuclear treatment. Dr. Elmaleh is the recipient of numerous NIH and DOE awards, and also serves as a consultant and scientific board advisor to several publicly traded biotechnology companies. He has founded several biotechnology companies, including Molecular Insight Pharmaceuticals, US BioSystems, Oncologic (merged with Procyon BioPharma), and Fluoropharma. He holds a BS in physics and chemistry, and an MS and PhD in chemistry from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Dr. Donald Ingber Advisor
Dr. Ingber is an advisor to PureTech Ventures. Dr. Ingber is the Judah Folkman Professor of Vascular Biology in the Department of Pathology, Harvard Medical School, senior staff member, Departments of Surgery and Pathology at Children's Hospital, and Associated Faculty Member, Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology, Dana Farber-Harvard Cancer Center, Harvard Materials Research Science & Engineering Center, and MIT Center for Bioengineering. Dr. Ingber is also the Founding Director of Harvard’s Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering. His research focuses on how living cells structure themselves so that they can change shape, move and grow. Over the past twenty years, he has pioneered the combined use of techniques from various fields, including molecular cell biology, engineering, chemistry, and computer science, to approach questions relating to how mechanical forces transmitted over extracellular matrix attachment scaffolds influence cell form and function and thereby, control tissue development. His work led to the discovery that transmembrane adhesion receptors, known as "integrins", mediate cellular mechanotransduction (the cellular response to force). In addition to his work on cell structure, he discovered TNP-470, the first angiogenesis inhibitor to enter clinical trials for the treatment of human cancer. Ingber is the recipient of many honors and has written over 250 scientific papers, many of which were published in premier world-class journals, such as Science and Nature. He is also an inventor on over 25 patents which cover technologies ranging from new cancer drugs and drug-screening assays to medical devices, micromanufacturing techniques, and computer software. Dr. Ingber received his BA, MA, M Phil, MD, and PhD degrees from Yale University.
Dr. Michael Rosenblatt Advisor
Dr. Rosenblatt is an advisor to PureTech Ventures. Dr. Rosenblatt has extensive experience in medicine, research, business administration and the pharmaceutical industry. He is currently the Dean of Tufts University School of Medicine, and serves on the Shire Board of Directors. Previously he was George R. Minot Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and served as its Dean of Faculty. From 1999 to 2001, Dr. Rosenblatt served as President of Beth Israel Deaconess. Their new state-of-the-art emergency department, cardiac catheterization, and intensive care units were envisioned, built and opened for service under his leadership. He also improved the financial performance of that institution and recruited in five new chiefs of service. Previously, he served as Director of the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology, a medical education organization for MD, PhD, and MD-PhD training jointly sponsored by Harvard and MIT. Prior to that, he was Senior Vice President for Research at Merck Sharp & Dohme Research Laboratories where he headed the worldwide development team for alendronate (FOSAMAX), Merck's bisphosphonate for osteoporosis and bone disorders. From 1981 to 1984, he served as Chief of the Endocrine Unit, Massachusetts General Hospital. He attended medical school at Harvard and completed his training at the Massachusetts General Hospital.
Dr. Dennis Selkoe Advisor
Dr. Dennis Selkoe is a founding Scientific Advisory Board member of Satori Pharmaceuticals, a PureTech portfolio company focused on protein misfolding disorders and initially targeting Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Selkoe has been setting the pace of Alzheimer's disease research for the last 25 years. He oversees a team of researchers as the Vincent and Stella Coates Professor of Neurologic Diseases and the Co-director of the Center for Neurologic diseases at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School. Research from his lab helped uncover the protein nature of the amyloid plaques, the hallmark of Alzheimer's, along with the proposed biological mechanism that generates the formation Of the plaques. This insightful research has resulted in some 250 peer-reviewed publications, including numerous articles in top research journals such as Science and Nature. More importantly, Dr. Selkoe's research has translated into the clinic where ongoing drug trials are beginning to treat Alzheimer's patients with therapies based in part on his ideas and work Dr. Selkoe's achievements have not gone unnoticed. In 2002, he received the Dr. A.H. Heinenken Prize for Medicine for "his invaluable contribution to the development of the molecular study of disease of the brain, in particular Alzheimer's disease". Additional accolades include the Mathilde Solowey Award in Neurosciences from the NIH, the Pioneer Award from the Alzheimer's Association USA, and a recent appointment as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. Selkoe's research has also generated insights into the function of specific cell proteins that will have a far reaching impact on other areas of biology. Dr. Selkoe also serves as a Non-Executive Director of Elan Pharmaceuticals, and was a founder of Athena.
Dr. Clifford Woolf Advisor
Dr. Clifford Woolf is an advisor to PureTech and the founding SAB Chairman of Solace Pharmaceuticals, a PureTech portfolio company focused on novel treatments for pain. Dr Woolf is the first incumbent of the Richard Kitz Chair of Anesthesia Research at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. After training for his MD and PhD at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg South Africa, Dr Woolf moved to England in 1978, where he worked at University College London for close to 20 years, latterly as a Professor of Neurobiology. In 1997 Dr Woolf moved to Boston and established the Neural Plasticity Research Group based in the Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care at the Massachusetts General Hospital and which is a part of the Neuroscience Program at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Woolf’s research has led to numerous scientific breakthroughs, including the identification of the role of “central sensitization” in inflammatory and neuropathic pain.
Mr. Frederick Frank Advisor
Frederick Frank is a Senior Advisor to PureTech Ventures. Frederick Frank is Vice Chairman of Peter J. Solomon Company, a member of its Mergers and Acquisitions Group, and co-heads PJSC’s global pharmaceutical and life sciences practice. He was formerly Vice Chairman of Barclays Capital, and previous to thatwas Vice Chairman and a Director of Lehman Brothers Inc. Before joining Lehman Brothers as a Partner, Mr. Frank was co-director of research, as well as Vice President and Director, of Smith, Barney & Co. Incorporated. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst, a member of The New York Society of Security Analysts and a past president of the Chemical Processing Industry Analysts. Mr. Frank has provided investment banking services to a host of companies in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, healthcare service providers, medical device and nutraceutical industries, and has been involved in hundreds of financings and merger and acquisition transactions in the health care field.
He is Chairman of the National Genetics Foundation, a past director of the Salk Institute, a member of the Yale School of Organization and Management Advisory Board, a member of the Pharmaceutical Executive Magazine advisory board, Chairman of the Board of The Irvington Institute for Immunological Research, a member of the Advisory Board of The Harvard School of Public Health and also the John's Hopkin's Bloomberg School of Public Health, and he serves on the Advisory Board of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Center for Biomedical Innovation.
Mr. Frank was honored for Outstanding Contributions in the Field of Immunology in 1998 by the Irvington Institute for Immunological Research, and, in 1997, he received the Biotech Meeting at Laguna Niguel Hall of Fame Award for Special Recognition for an Individual. He received The Albert Einstein Award from the Weizmann Institute of Science in 2004, the 2006 Gilda’s Club of New York City Visionary Award and was selected The Top 100 Living Contributors to Biotechnology by Reed Elsevier.
Dr. Peter Farina Advisor
Dr. Peter R. Farina is a Senior Advisor to PureTech Ventures. . Dr. Farina was previously Senior Vice President of Development at Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. in Ridgefield, CT where he was responsible for North American development of drugs in the therapeutic areas of Immunology/Inflammation, Virology and Cardiovascular Disease. Prior to this position he served as Vice President of Research from 1998-2002 at the Ridgefield Center. He has also held positions as Director of Inflammatory Diseases and Director of Biochemistry over his 26 year career with Boehringer Ingelheim. Prior to joining BI he spent 6 years in the Corporate Research Laboratories and Medical Products Division of Union Carbide Corporation in Tarrytown, NY where he did research and development of immunodiagnostics. Dr. Farina’s research interest has been generally at the interface of Chemistry and Biology. He has worked over his research career in inflammatory and immunological mechanisms, particularly cytokines and arachidonic acid mediators. In addition, he was engaged in HIV virology research which led to discovery and successful registration of one of the first non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors Viramune (nevirapine). He is the author of over fifty publications and patents.
Dr. Farina currently serves as the Co-Chair and Board Member of Connecticut United for Research Excellence (CURE); Connecticut Governor’s Council on Economic Competitiveness and Technology Advisory Board and on the Advisory Board of the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy.
Dr. Frank Douglas Senior Partner Emeritus
Dr. Douglas is a Senior Partner Emeritus at PureTech Ventures. Previously, he was Professor of the Practice at MIT, the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences & Technology, and Executive Director of the MIT Center for Biomedical Innovation. Dr. Douglas was also a member of the Board of Management and Executive Vice President, Drug Innovation and Approval, and Chief Scientific Officer of Aventis SA, where he oversaw global pharmaceutical research, development and regulatory activities. Prior to his positions with Aventis, Dr. Douglas was EVP of Global Research at Hoechst Marion Roussel, EVP of Research and Development at Marion Merrel Dow, and SVP & Director of Research at CIBA-GEIGY. He also served as Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Science and Regulatory Section of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers Association (PhRMA), has been a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Advisory Board of the Paul Ehrlich Foundation, and a member of the Board of Directors of Alantos, Gene Logic, Nitromed Inc., and Archemix Inc. Currently, Dr. Douglas is President and CEO of the Bioinnovation Institute in Akron, and a Kauffman Foundation Senior Fellow. He has received the Lewis B. Russell Memorial Award from the American Heart Association, the J.W. von Goethe Frankfurt University Medal of Honor and was named the recipient of the Global Pharmaceutical R&D Director of the Year Award in 2001, and again in 2004. Throughout his career Dr. Douglas has led teams that have discovered, developed, or extended the indications of more than 20 drugs. As a senior executive, he pioneered organizational changes that were forerunners in the emerging field of Translational Medicine, and he introduced Chemical Biology Platforms to the pharmaceutical industry. Dr. Douglas received his PhD in physical chemistry and MD from Cornell University.
Dr. Martucci is an Associate at PureTech Ventures. He is also currently a Kauffman Entrepreneur Fellow, a program sponsored by the Kauffman Foundation. Dr. Martucci completed his graduate work at Yale University in the Departments of Pharmacology and Molecular Biophysics & Biochemistry, focusing on the rational design of novel allosteric inhibitors for a pathogenic parasite. He led a research project that characterized a potential enzyme drug target and identified two novel chemical scaffolds as potent proof-of-concept compounds for novel antiparasitic therapy. During his graduate work, he received NIH training grants in both Chemical Biology and Parasitology. Dr. Martucci received his B.S. in Biochemistry from Providence College, and his M.Phil. and Ph.D. from Yale University.

He completed his doctoral work at the Chemical Engineering Department at MIT, where he co-developed a novel method to increase oxygen transfer in bioreactors by using hydrocarbon-coated magnetic nanoparticles. During his graduate work, Dr. Olle was awarded the “la Caixa” fellowship by the King of Spain, and also consulted for established chemical and pharmaceutical companies, and start-ups developing antimicrobials and biofuels. Dr. Olle received his B.Eng. in Chemical Engineering from Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Spain, his M.S. and PhD in Chemical Engineering Practice from MIT, and his MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management.
Dr. Behr is a Principal with PureTech Ventures unearthing and evaluating venture creation opportunities. Dr. Behr is part of the founding team of Endra Inc., a PureTech portfolio company. Prior to joining PureTech as a full time employee, Dr. Behr was a technical consultant to Enlight Biosciences, another PureTech portfolio company. Dr. Behr completed his graduate work in the Biological Engineering Department at M.I.T., where he developed a wide variety of novel analytical tools to analyze protein glycosylation. The Howard Hughes Medical Institute awarded Dr. Behr a predoctoral fellowship to support the entirety of his Ph.D. studies, and while at M.I.T., Dr. Behr was awarded the seminal Outstanding Undergraduate Alumnus award from the Rice University Biological Engineering Department. Dr. Behr earned his B.S. in Biological Engineering at Rice University, and his Ph.D. in Biological Engineering at M.I.T.
Mr. Muniz is a Partner at PureTech, as well as the General Counsel and Chief Operating Officer. Prior to joining PureTech, he was a Partner in the Corporate Department of Edwards, Angell, Palmer & Dodge LLP, where he practiced law for 10 years. Mr. Muniz’s practice at EAPD focused on the representation of life science venture funds as well as their portfolio companies in general corporate matters and in investment and liquidity transactions. Mr. Muniz has a BA in Economics and Accounting from The College of the Holy Cross and a JD from New England School of Law where he graduated summa cum laude.
Dr. Miller is an Associate with PureTech Ventures. Dr. Miller completed his graduate work focusing on polymeric biomaterials in the Chemical Engineering Department at M.I.T. In graduate school, he was awarded the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship and completed course work at the MIT Sloan School of Management. Dr. Miller received his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from M.I.T.
Dr. John LaMattina Senior Partner
Dr. LaMattina is the former President, Pfizer Global Research and Development and Senior Vice President, Pfizer Inc. During his 30 year career at Pfizer Inc., Dr. LaMattina held positions of increasing responsibility for Pfizer Central Research, including Vice President of US Discovery Operations in 1993, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Discovery Operations in 1998 and Senior Vice President of Worldwide Development in 1999. During Dr. LaMattina’s leadership tenure Pfizer discovered and/or developed a number of important new medicines including Tarceva, Chantix, Zoloft (PTSD), Selzentry and Lyrica along with a number of other medicines currently in late stage development for cancer, rheumatoid arthritis and pain. He is the author of numerous scientific publications and U.S. patents. In addition, Dr. LaMattina is the author of “Drug Truths: Dispelling the Myths About Pharma R&D”. Dr. LaMattina received the 1998 Boston College Alumni Award of Excellence in Science and the 2004 American Diabetes Association Award for Leadership and Commitment in the Fight Against Diabetes. He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from the University of New Hampshire in 2007. During this same year he was the recipient of the Just One Break, Inc. Lifetime Achievement Award and the Legal Momentum Equal Opportunity Award. He will also be the recipient of the American Chemical Society’s Earle B. Barnes Award for Leadership in Chemical Research Management in 2010. Dr. LaMattina serves on the Board of Directors of Human Genome Sciences and Neurogen and serves as Chairman of the Strategic Advisory Committee for Bilcare. He also is a member of the Board of Trustees of Boston College. Dr. LaMattina received a B.S. in Chemistry from Boston College in 1971, and received a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of New Hampshire in 1975. He then moved on to Princeton University as a National Institutes of Health Postdoctoral Fellow in the laboratory of Professor E. C. Taylor.
Mr. Murray is an Analyst with PureTech Ventures. Prior to joining PureTech, he was a strategy consultant with Bionest Partners, a boutique healthcare consultancy, where he focused on product commercialization and strategic partnering for pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms. Mr. Murray also worked as a consultant at Charles River Associates and, prior to that, conducted research on the role of intellectual property in the molecular diagnostics sector at the Sloan School of Management. Mr. Murray received his BS in Mechanical Engineering with a focus on Biology from MIT.
